Global Oil Shock: Strategies to Ease the Crisis

The International Energy Agency (IEA) recommends immediate actions to mitigate the effects of a global oil supply disruption, as tensions in the Middle East cause prices to soar above USD 100 per barrel. This comes after military actions involving the US, Israel, and Iran disrupt vital shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
India is particularly vulnerable due to its heavy reliance on oil imports, with the price surge threatening its current account deficit, currency stability, and overall economic health. Retail fuel prices have largely remained steady, but the cost of cooking gas has risen significantly, impacting Indian households.
The IEA's proposed measures include promoting telecommuting, reducing highway speed limits, enhancing public transportation usage, and optimizing industrial fuel efficiency. As emergency reserves are tapped, the agency stresses the importance of strategic demand reduction and targeted government interventions to protect vulnerable populations.
