Aviation expert Sanat Kaul has called for the imposition of stricter controls on domestic airfares, highlighting the potential impact of a duopoly on ticket prices. He suggests the establishment of regulatory limits on fares to safeguard consumer interests.
Kaul pointed out that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) possesses the authority to regulate soaring airfares and should utilize these powers to protect travelers. The current situation, exemplified by issues related to IndiGo, underscores the need for pricing reforms and possibly a grievance tribunal for air passengers.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Civil Aviation announced the withdrawal of temporary fare caps on domestic flights, originally set to curb price spikes due to capacity constraints. The Ministry emphasized the necessity for airlines to maintain pricing responsibility after deregulation.
