Diplomatic Strains: Russia to Expel Dutch Journalist Amid Tensions

Russia announces the expulsion of a Dutch journalist in retaliation for the Netherlands' removal of a Russian correspondent. Moscow's Foreign Ministry cited its decision as contingent on the treatment of Russian media abroad. Few Western journalists remain in Russia due to past conflict-related sanctions and censorship laws against wartime misinformation.

Russia declared on Wednesday its intention to expel a Dutch journalist. This move is a direct response to what Russian officials term as the Netherlands' expulsion of a journalist associated with the Russian state news agency RIA.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced that Russia would revoke both the Dutch journalist's accreditation and residence permit. She indicated, however, that Moscow could review this decision if the Dutch government ensures adequate conditions for the Russian journalist in question.

Most Western reporters have left Russia since 2022, following its large-scale invasion of Ukraine and implementation of strict censorship laws punishing alleged misinformation about the war. Moscow often criticizes the perceived unfair treatment of its journalists in Western countries, although expulsions remain infrequent.
