The Director of Census Operations for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, Amit Sharma, presented the roadmap for the upcoming 2027 Census in Ladakh, underscoring the importance of accurately documenting each resident. The army, however, will be counted separately. The 'as is, where is' principle will ensure that residents are counted at their current location.
Sharma highlighted that the significant presence of the army in Ladakh necessitates a distinct approach, with separate figures dedicated to military counts. As part of India's 16th Census, and the eighth since Independence, this edition introduces digital self-enumeration, offering citizens the option to record their own data online. The census is divided into two phases.
Phase I, set for April to September 2026, will gather information on housing conditions and amenities. It introduces a 15-day period for citizens to self-enumerate digitally. Phase II, scheduled for February 2027, will collect comprehensive demographic and socio-economic data. Areas with challenging terrains, including Ladakh, will see enumeration in September 2027. Meanwhile, Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, has already completed his household's digital self-enumeration, setting a precedent for citizens, marking a milestone for India's first-ever digital census.
