In a significant move towards streamlining the power trading landscape, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has put forth a proposal for designating Grid Controller of India Ltd (Grid India) as the market coupling operator. This comes as part of an effort to establish uniform price discovery across Power Exchanges.
The draft regulations, unveiled earlier this month, outline a system where Grid India will aggregate bids across various market segments, aiming for efficient price discovery. This setup will encompass the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) and Real-Time Market (RTM), among others, as specified in the regulatory draft.
The new mechanism proposes that all power exchanges should collect bids in a standard format, converging them into a single market-clearing price, which will address existing disparities. The price discovery will focus on maximizing economic surplus while maintaining market efficiency, thus paving the way for a more cohesive power market in India.
