In a significant development for India's nuclear energy program, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Kalpakkam fast breeder reactor has reached criticality, hailing it as a 'historic milestone'.
During his monthly radio address, 'Mann Ki Baat', Modi applauded the efforts of Indian nuclear scientists for advancing the civil nuclear programme. He emphasized that this accomplishment is a testament to the indigenous technology employed in building the reactor.
The 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor is crucial for India's long-term nuclear strategy, designed to use Uranium-Plutonium Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel and eventually incorporate Thorium-232, converting it to Uranium-233 through transmutation.
