In a bold move towards self-reliance, the Indian government has unveiled an ambitious five-year mission to enhance the country's cotton productivity with an investment of Rs 5,659.22 crore, according to an official statement from Tuesday. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet has approved the plan, aiming to tackle growth stagnation and quality issues within India's cotton sector.

This initiative aligns with the '5F vision' — Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign. It focuses on developing disease and pest-resistant high-yielding variety seeds, intensifying existing crop production technologies, and promoting state-of-the-art production methodologies. The mission’s target is to increase cotton production from 291 lakh bales in 2025-26 to 498 lakh bales by 2031, boosting lint productivity significantly from 440 kg/hectare to 755 kg/hectare.

The strategic rollout, which will involve ministries and agricultural bodies, also aims to modernize ginning factories, expand cotton exports, and establish robust branding initiatives. Furthermore, it seeks to integrate digital platforms for transparent pricing, incorporate natural fibres into India's cotton industry, and promote sustainable textile innovations, thus paving the way for an efficient and eco-friendly cotton sector.
