Uttar Pradesh's Organic Revolution: Cow Shelters Transform into Fertiliser Hubs

The Uttar Pradesh government aims to convert 7,500 cow shelters into organic fertiliser centres to boost rural employment, women's empowerment, and increase farmers' incomes. This initiative, led by Shyam Bihari Gupta, will reduce chemical dependence in farming and improve soil fertility through the use of cow dung and urine.

The Uttar Pradesh government is set to launch a transformative initiative aimed at increasing rural employment by converting approximately 7,500 cow shelters into organic fertiliser production hubs, according to officials' announcements on Tuesday.

These centres are part of a broader strategy to integrate cow protection efforts with economic benefits for farmers, rural youth, and women, as well as enhancing soil fertility through natural farming practices. The effort, led by Shyam Bihari Gupta, Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Cow Service Commission, represents a shift from traditional practices of cow protection, aligning religious sentiments with tangible economic outcomes.

By harnessing cow dung and urine, which are abundant in the state's cow shelters, organic fertilisers and natural pesticides will be produced, reducing the farming community's reliance on chemical products. Additionally, the government has sanctioned Rs 2,000 crore for cow protection, alongside another Rs 100 crore for setting up extensive cow protection facilities. Women's self-help groups and farmer-producer organisations are key stakeholders in this initiative.
