In a significant move, Tamil Nadu's newly elected Chief Minister Vijay has ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor outlets operating near schools, colleges, religious establishments, and bus stands, prompting widespread support from political figures and the public. This decision is seen as a step toward safeguarding public welfare and potential future prohibition of alcohol in the state.
Welcoming the directive, MMK MLA MH Jawahirullah expressed hope for complete prohibition, emphasizing the importance of considering the welfare of future generations. His sentiments echo throughout political circles, indicating strong support for the Chief Minister's decision, notably from TVK leader Selvi S Keerthana and MLA Vijay Saravanan, who both praised the initiative as an essential step for women's welfare.
The Chief Minister's order, which targets locations within a 500-meter radius of sensitive areas, is one of the first major policy decisions under the TVK government's administration. The undertaking follows a recent survey identifying non-compliant outlets and reflects the government's commitment to public welfare over revenue concerns, as TASMAC remains a significant source of state income.
