Three persons, including a woman, died after their car skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in Mizoram's Lunglei district, police said on Monday.
The incident was believed to have occurred late Saturday when the victims were returning from Lunglei, according to police.
The deceased have been identified as K Lalhlimpuia (25), Jerry Lalnunfela (40), and PC Lalrintluangi (24), all were residents of Hauruang.
They said that a woman filed a missing person complaint at Lunglei police station on Sunday after her son and his companions failed to return home after travelling to Lunglei on Saturday night.
Following the complaint, police launched an immediate search operation.
By tracing Lalhlimpuia's mobile phone location, authorities found that the phone signal was still within the Hauruang area.
Further investigation led police to discover that the car had skidded off the road and plunged down a slope along the roadside.
As news of the accident spread, local volunteers and residents from neighbouring villages rushed to the scene and began efforts to retrieve the bodies.
The bodies of the three victims were recovered at around 7 pm on Sunday, police said.
Following post-mortem examination, the three were laid to rest at Hauruang cemetery on Monday, they said.
