The Pune City Police has enacted prohibitory measures under Section 37 of the Maharashtra Police Act, effective from May 26 to June 8, in anticipation of the Bakri Eid festival and other significant events. The official directive, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Dr Prashant Avasakar, addresses potential threats to law and order.
The order highlights concerns over political and social groups organizing events like marches, sit-ins, and demonstrations, which could lead to unrest. The restrictions are aimed at preserving public peace, safety, and law and order within Pune City Police Commissionerate limits.
According to the order, carrying weapons, explosives, or any potentially harmful items is banned, alongside loud public expressions, effigy burning, and provocative activities that might harm social harmony. Gatherings exceeding five people, processions, and slogan shouting are restricted unless authorized by the Pune Police Commissioner.
Exemptions apply to government officials on duty, private security, home guards, and watchmen with sticks under 3.5 feet. Violators risk penalties under Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act. These steps, in force until June 8, aim to ensure public safety during the festival period.
