Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative, the 'Sindhu Jal Samriddhi Abhiyan', by commissioning India's inaugural rock check dam on the Indus River near Leh. This ambitious move seeks to address chronic water scarcity by offering an environmentally sustainable solution for local agriculturists.

Announcing the launch on social media, Saxena emphasized that the rock check dam represents a revolutionary shift from conventional concrete structures. Constructed by intricately interlocking stones from the riverbed, the dam serves as a semi-permanent barrier managing river flow, creating vital water storage to aid farming activities in the summer months.

Encouraged by the dam's potential, additional experimental dams have been tasked for construction under the oversight of the Irrigation & Flood Control Department. Concurrently, a large-scale ecological restoration project is set to revive 800 acres of non-arable land in Leh, drawing inspiration from Project Him Sarovar to enhance groundwater and support sustainable agriculture throughout Ladakh.
