India Launches Ambitious 12-Year Environmental Roadmap

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav outlined India's comprehensive 12-year environmental plan, featuring widespread reforms like expanded Ramsar sites, increased protected areas, species protection projects, a circular economy push, and 'Mission LiFE' for urban centers. The initiative also focuses on afforestation and combatting coastal erosion.

On World Environment Day, Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, unveiled a monumental 12-year environmental conservation strategy formulated by the central government. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Yadav elaborated on a series of policy reforms, species protection efforts, and stringent measures against pollution targeting India's sustainable development.

A key feature of the announcement was India's notable expansion of Ramsar sites, increasing the number of internationally recognized protected wetlands from 24 to a landmark 100 since 2014. Simultaneously, the nation has significantly bolstered its number of tiger reserves from 48 to 58, marking a new chapter in conservation efforts.

Yadav emphasized the government's focus on Eco-Sensitive Zones, noting a substantial increase in such areas from 24, prior to 2014, to approximately 380 under the current administration. Special programs like Project Lion, Project Tiger, and Project Cheetah are critical in pulling endangered species back from the brink.

Recent amendments to the Biodiversity Act have set the groundwork for a village-level biodiversity register, crucial for preserving native flora and fauna. Additionally, the government's 'MISHTI' Mangrove project addresses coastal erosion, while the Aravalli conservation program safeguards India's ancient mountain ecosystems.

The government is pushing for a shift to a circular economy amidst rapid urban expansion, introducing stringent regulations on waste management and augmenting India's solar capacity. This transformative approach aligns with significant upgrades to non-fossil fuel infrastructures.

'Mission LiFE,' a flagship initiative, aims to influence urban behavior towards sustainability, focusing on water, food, and energy conservation, banning single-use plastics, waste management, embracing a healthy lifestyle, and establishing a circular economy.

Further fostering community-driven afforestation efforts is the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, urging citizens across the nation to plant trees as part of their environmental responsibility. (ANI)
