Marking World Environment Day, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu called for widespread collaboration in environmental conservation. His address at Shimla's Ridge stressed the importance of India's 'Lungs of North India' and the ecological services valued at Rs 90,000 crore provided by the state, often with inadequate central compensation.
Sukhu urged citizens to integrate green practices like tree planting into daily routines amid rising global temperatures and emphasized the shared responsibility in protecting precious natural resources. The state anticipates enhancing forest coverage to 32% by 2030, supported by initiatives such as the 'Mukhya Mantri Van Vistar Yojana' and various plantation schemes.
The Chief Minister also tackled the drug abuse crisis, announcing a crackdown on 'chitta' traffickers with the PIT-NDPS Act leading to 174 arrests and asset seizures worth Rs 51 crore. Stressing a zero-tolerance policy, Sukhu affirmed efforts to bring affected youth back into society and highlighted anti-drug measures extending to public servants. He highlighted other sustainability efforts, including an electric vehicle boost and biochar plant setup.
