The Keralam government has unveiled a significant initiative, announcing free bus travel for women on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) ordinary buses, starting June 15. This historic measure was revealed by Transport Minister CP John during a press conference held on Friday.
Minister CP John made it clear that the scheme does not require special cards or certificates, thereby ensuring accessibility for all women across the state. He emphasized the state's commitment to bearing the fiscal weight, estimated at ₹2 crore daily, without unduly burdening KSRTC. The Chief Minister has pledged additional support for this initiative.
This landmark move aligns with the newly formed government's agenda under Chief Minister VD Satheesan, who recently took office after a decade-long gap. The administration views the initiative as a boost to the overall economy, potentially increasing women's disposable income significantly. A special inaugural event is scheduled for June 15, at Thampanoor bus station, where a bus operated entirely by women staff will mark the commencement of this initiative.
