The Himachal Pradesh government has announced the approval of the annual Kinnaur Kailash Yatra, set to take place from July 1 to July 30, capping the number of pilgrims at 375 per day. This comes with strict measures requiring mandatory registration for guides and tour operators to ensure enhanced environmental protections.
Revenue, Horticulture, and Tribal Development Minister Jagat Singh Negi made the announcement following a district-level meeting, which included senior officials from the district administration, police, forest, health, and irrigation departments, along with local tour operators and representatives from various dev sabhas.
The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra, regarded as both a significant pilgrimage and an economic lifeline for local youth, attracts numerous pilgrims, adventure tourists, and trekkers annually. Despite concerns over environmental impact, including waste management and biodiversity threats, the administration has decided to proceed with the pilgrimage by implementing stricter regulations and monitoring.
'The meeting addressed various concerns raised by local dev sabhas. Despite some suggestions to halt the pilgrimage, it plays a crucial role in the local economy. Thus, we've decided to continue with additional safeguards,' Negi stated.
New regulations have been established, allowing only 375 pilgrims to proceed daily under monitored conditions, maintaining the pilgrimage's environmental and safety standards. The administration will require all participating tour operators and guides to register and obtain identity cards, ensuring only authorized personnel are involved.
Local dev sabhas are set to play an essential role in monitoring environmental compliance, with the administration providing logistical support. These measures reflect the commitment to conduct a safe and eco-friendly pilgrimage, ensuring the protection of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
