A seven-year-old boy, Arjav, from the Malappuram district has died due to a Shigella infection while receiving treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala. The boy, who was a second-grade student at Malappuram AUP School, was admitted on June 12 after experiencing severe fever and diarrhea.
Despite intensive care, Arjav's condition deteriorated, leading to his tragic death. Reports indicate a rise in Shigella cases across the state, with two more children recently diagnosed in the Kozhikode district. Their cases include a one-year-old from Kunnamangalam in critical condition, while a nine-year-old from Payyoli has been discharged.
Since January, authorities have confirmed 135 Shigella cases in Kerala, with 68 from Kozhikode district alone. The monsoon season has seen a spike in infections, prompting the Health Department to increase preventive efforts. Measures include closing a tender coconut shop in Tirurangadi where Shigella bacteria were found. Health officials urge public vigilance, stressing the disease spreads through contaminated food and water.
