A case was registered against a man in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district for allegedly posting false information on WhatsApp about two couples being infected by coronavirus, police said on Friday. The man posted false information on a WhatsApp group that two couples from Ichalkaranji had tested positive for coronavirus and were shifted to Kolhapur, an official said.
When the matter came to light, a case was registered against the person under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code and Disaster Management Act 2005, he said. The state government has imposed the Disaster Management Act, under which spreading rumours and unauthorised information about coronavirus is a punishable offence.
The authorities have launched a severe crackdown on rumour mongers and those spreading false information on social media about Covid-19. Maharashtra has recorded 52 positive cases of coronavirus so far.
