France's new coronavirus infections above 26,000 over 24 hours

The French health ministry reported 26,457 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours on Wednesday, up sharply from 11,395 on Tuesday, and a level unseen since Nov. 18. France, which launched its gradual vaccination campaign Sunday, saw the number of persons hospitalised for the disease decline by 183 over 24 hours.
France's cumulative total of cases now stands at 2,600,498, the fifth-highest in the world. The COVID-19 death toll was up by 303, at 64,381, versus a rise of 969 on Tuesday.
