The recent occurrence of fire incidents in healthcare facilities due to electrical malfunctions and equipment overload has prompted the Union Health Ministry to prioritize the safety and well-being of patients, staff, and visitors. Recognizing the potential risks associated with such hazards, the ministry has underscored the importance of implementing stringent protocols and measures to prevent, detect, and respond to fires effectively.

Key Recommendations and Outcomes

Regular Preventive Fire Risk Assessment Drills: States/UTs are advised to conduct regular preventive fire risk assessment drills, especially during the summer months when temperatures escalate. These drills aim to identify potentially vulnerable areas and ensure proactive measures are in place.

Stricter Compliance and Assessment: There is a need for strict compliance and rigorous periodic assessment of all health facilities concerning fire safety norms. States/UTs and healthcare institutes are urged to ensure better coordination with Public Works Departments (PWDs) and local fire departments to obtain fire safety No Objection Certificates (NOCs) in a timely manner.

Checklist on Fire Safety Maintenance: A checklist on ‘Prevention and Maintenance of Fire Safety’ has been shared with States/UTs, with a request to ensure its completion by all healthcare facilities. This checklist serves as a guideline for assessing and enhancing fire safety measures within the facilities.

Regular Mock Drills and Coordination: States/UTs are urged to ensure stricter compliance with regulatory protocols and conduct regular mock drills on fire safety. Feedback from macro-level assessments should inform the improvement of fire safety protocols and procedures.

Collaborative Efforts for Enhanced Safety

The latest review meeting, chaired by key officials from the Union Health Ministry, emphasized the tragic consequences of recent fire accidents in healthcare facilities. With participation from representatives of State Health Departments and numerous healthcare organizations, the meeting facilitated collaborative efforts to address fire safety challenges effectively.

Ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities is paramount. By implementing robust fire safety plans, conducting regular assessments and drills, and fostering coordination among relevant stakeholders, healthcare facilities can mitigate the risks associated with fire hazards and safeguard lives and property effectively.
