In a grim turn of events on Monday, a police constable tasked with protecting a polio vaccination team was critically injured when unknown gunmen launched an attack in the volatile Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, police reported.
The assault occurred during a door-to-door polio immunization drive in the Wargari Bhittani area of Lakki Marwat district. In a subsequent gunbattle, one of the assailants was killed while three others managed to escape, leaving the policeman with serious injuries, according to local law enforcement.
Police have since cordoned off the area and initiated a massive search operation to apprehend the attackers. This marks the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting polio campaigns in Pakistan. Notably, 11 police officers have already been killed this year while on duty for such initiatives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. In response, Chief Minister KPK Ali Amin Gandapur condemned the attack and wished the injured officer a swift recovery.
