Anorexia, a severe and often deadly eating disorder, has been historically under-researched. Recent investigations into its connection with oestrogen offer new hope for treatment. Despite being one of the deadliest mental illnesses, anorexia remains poorly understood and underfunded.

Only a handful of high-quality studies have reviewed decades of global research on anorexia, a stark contrast to the abundance of studies on other mental health conditions like generalised anxiety disorder.

Fortunately, progress is being made. Researchers at Monash University and other institutions are uncovering how hormonal changes affect women's mental health. Their work has found a link between anorexia and oestrogen, despite complexities in understanding how low oestrogen levels relate to the disorder.
