Health authorities in Pune confirmed six new cases of the Zika virus, including two pregnant women, raising alarms in the city.
Among the afflicted were a 28-year-old woman from Erandwane and another who is 12 weeks pregnant, both showing no symptoms thus far.
Officials also revealed that the first Zika case identified involved a 46-year-old doctor and his 15-year-old daughter. Two other cases were from the Mundhwa area, involving a 47-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man.
The Zika virus, originating in Uganda in 1947, is primarily spread through Aedes mosquito bites, which also transmit dengue and chikungunya. This virus is especially dangerous for pregnant women, potentially leading to microcephaly in newborns.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has escalated surveillance and initiated aggressive mosquito control measures such as fogging and fumigation to manage the outbreak.
