A recent case study has spotlighted the severe health dangers linked to long-term exposure to pigeons. An 11-year-old boy from East Delhi presented at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital with what seemed like a routine cough but soon worsened, as his respiratory functions declined.
Diagnosed with Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP) due to allergic reactions to pigeon proteins, the child needed immediate medical attention. Dr. Dhiren Gupta, Co-Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, explained that HP is a chronic lung disease causing lung scarring and breathing difficulties.
Medical tests revealed lung inflammation consistent with HP. The boy was treated with steroids and high-flow oxygen therapy. His condition improved, and he was discharged with a comprehensive care plan. The case emphasizes the importance of recognizing early signs of HP and educating the public about environmental triggers like bird droppings.
