A road in Abu Dhabi has been named after Dr George Matthew, an 84-year-old doctor of Indian descent, in a gesture of appreciation for his notable contributions to the UAE’s health sector. Dr Matthew's work in healthcare has been recognised by the Department of Municipalities and Transport as part of its 'Honouring UAE’s Visionaries: Commemorative Streets' initiative.

The newly named George Matthew Street is situated near Sheikh Shakbooth Medical City in Al Mafraq. Reflecting on his journey, Dr Matthew recalled arriving in the UAE in 1967 when the country's infrastructure was still in early stages of development. Inspired by the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Dr Matthew devoted himself to serving the people of the UAE, a dedication that has now been officially acknowledged.

Beginning his career as a General Practitioner, Dr Matthew, affectionately known as Matyous by locals, has held key positions in the UAE’s healthcare system, including Medical Director of Al Ain Region and Health Authority Consultant. His work has substantially advanced healthcare services and promoted modern medical practices in the UAE.

Dr Matthew's commitment to education and professional development, including training stints in England and at Harvard, has been pivotal in shaping the UAE’s healthcare landscape. He played a seminal role in training healthcare workers, earning the trust and admiration of his peers and the community. The UAE granted Dr Matthew and his family citizenship a decade ago in acknowledgement of his invaluable service.

Currently working in the Private Health department alongside Dr Abdul Rahim Jaafar, Dr Matthew continues to serve the community. Expressing his deep gratitude, he said he remains ready to support the country and its citizens for as long as he can. Dr Matthew, originally from Kerala, India, moved to the UAE with his wife Valsa and their daughter, who currently works in the government sector.
