Rise in Scrub Typhus Cases in Kolkata: A Detailed Report

Scrub typhus cases have increased slightly in Kolkata compared to last year. While the situation isn't alarming, several children are receiving treatment in hospitals, including private facilities. The number of scrub typhus cases in Kolkata has risen compared to last year, but the health situation remains under control, according to a senior state health department official.

Both state-run and private hospitals are witnessing a slight increase in patients, including children. Currently, two children are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Paediatric Sciences. The Institute of Child Health, a private facility, has reported treating over 20 scrub typhus patients.

Scrub typhus, a bacterial disease spread through bites of infected chiggers, primarily affects children. While common symptoms include fever and body ache, severe cases can lead to complications involving the lungs, liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Despite the rise in cases this year, health officials stress that the situation is not alarming.
