The Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) has endorsed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India's (FSSAI) recent approval of mandatory bold labelling for salt, sugar, and fat on packaged food items, a move expected to significantly cut down on diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
SJM national co-convenor Ashwani Mahajan emphasized the general public's lack of awareness about the harmful contents in ultra-processed foods. He highlighted the government's duty to educate consumers on safe consumption, citing the labelling initiative as a crucial step in that direction.
Approved on July 6, the new labelling guidelines require total salt, sugar, and saturated fat to be displayed prominently. Mahajan expressed gratitude to the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and FSSAI for their decisive action, noting it would aid consumers, including young people, in making healthier choices and lowering the incidence of non-communicable diseases.
