Ten government hospitals in Delhi have initiated an indefinite strike, ceasing all elective services on Monday, in response to the brutal rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata.
The hospitals involved include Maulana Azad Medical College, RML Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, GTB, IHBAS, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, and the National Institute of TB and Respiratory Diseases Hospital. The strike commenced at 9 am, as per the Resident Doctors' Associations (RDA).
The RDA has ensured that while outpatient departments (OPDs), operation theatres (OTs), and ward duties are shuttered, emergency services will continue unaffected. This action follows a nationwide call to strike by the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) after a postgraduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.
The body of the 32-year-old woman was discovered semi-naked in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital on Thursday night. In solidarity, the RDA declared a suspension of elective services nationwide starting Monday, August 12, urging urgent attention to their demands for justice and enhanced safety measures.
