ECDC Raises Mpox Risk Level Amid Global Strain Spread

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) elevated its risk level for mpox on Friday, a day after the first infection with a new strain was confirmed in Sweden. With Europe and Africa closely connected, ECDC officials expect more imported cases, although the risk of sustained transmission remains low.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also declared mpox a global public health emergency following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries. An emergency WHO meeting is set to address fair global access to tests, treatments, and vaccines.

Mpox, causing pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms, has two spreading strains: the endemic clade I and a new offshoot clade Ib. As the risk in the EU rises from 'very low' to 'low,' pharmaceutical companies developing mpox vaccines, such as Bavarian Nordic and Tonix Pharmaceuticals, have seen their stock prices soar.
