India's Vigilant Approach Towards Monkeypox: All Precautionary Measures Activated

India currently has no reported cases of Monkeypox, but the Union health ministry is implementing precautionary measures to prevent and control potential outbreaks. The risk of a large outbreak is deemed low despite WHO's emergency declaration. Past Monkeypox cases in India totaled 30, with the last case reported in March.

The Union health ministry confirmed on Saturday that there are currently no reported cases of Monkeypox in India. Despite this, cautionary measures are being implemented to prevent and control the disease's spread.

In a review meeting, officials noted that the risk of a large outbreak with sustained transmission is low, although a few imported cases might surface. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency in 2022, detecting a total of 30 cases in India, with the last case reported this March.

Union Health Minister J P Nadda led a meeting with senior ministry officials to reinforce preparedness at airports, seaports, and health facilities. The transmission usually occurs through prolonged close contact and generally via the sexual route or contaminated materials, officials noted.
