The students' association of Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute strongly condemned the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata on August 9. They expressed deep concerns over the incident and demanded immediate implementation of the Central Protection Act to ensure the safety of medical students and doctors.
Condoling with the victim’s family, the Association announced a peaceful rally involving students, doctors, and nurses from various medical colleges in Puducherry to seek justice. They called for a transparent investigation and immediate measures to protect all medical professionals.
In solidarity, the JIPMER Resident Doctors Association began a boycott of non-emergency services to emphasize their condemnation of the crime. Acknowledging the impact on patients, the Association insisted the strike would continue until justice is served and a safe environment is guaranteed for doctors.
The Director of JIPMER urged non-critical patients to avoid visiting the OPD to focus resources on serious cases. The hospital assured that emergency services would remain operational until normalcy is restored.
