The West Bengal government has refused to accept conditions set by agitating doctors for a meeting aimed at resolving the ongoing protest triggered by the rape and murder of a medic at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya stated that the state is prepared to listen but criticized the doctors for not approaching the meeting with an open mind.

The doctors had requested that 30 representatives be allowed to attend the meeting, the discussions be focused solely on their demands, the talks be aired live on TV, and the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Bhattacharya argued that such conditions undermine the prospect of an open and effective dialogue.

Bhattacharya questioned the timing of an email sent to the Chief Minister’s Office at 3:49 AM, alleging potential political provocation. She reiterated that the state government would adhere to the Supreme Court’s directives on the rejoining of duties by agitating doctors. The protesting doctors, however, maintained that their intentions were misinterpreted and that their conditions were consistent with previous demands.
