New research reveals that people who cram all their weekly exercise into one or two days, dubbed 'weekend warriors,' may reduce their risk of over 200 diseases, akin to those who spread their physical activity throughout the week.
Weekend warriors engage in moderate to vigorous exercise over the weekends, meeting the World Health Organization's recommendation of 150 minutes of exercise per week for overall health. The study, led by Shaan Khurshid and published in the Journal of American Medical Association, found that this pattern of physical activity is associated with lower risks of heart disease and stroke.
The research, which analyzed data from nearly 90,000 individuals in the UK Biobank dataset, suggests that weekend warriors and regular exercisers both benefit similarly, including reduced risks of cardiometabolic conditions like hypertension and obesity. The consistent benefits across different definitions of weekend warrior activity highlight the significant health advantages of meeting recommended physical activity levels, regardless of distribution throughout the week.
