Mumbai Records First Guillain-Barre Syndrome Fatality

A 53-year-old man from Mumbai has died due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), marking the city's first fatality from this nerve disorder. The patient, who had visited Pune amid a GBS outbreak, succumbed after being in critical condition. Officials confirmed the incident, highlighting GBS's severe impact on nerves.

A man aged 53 has become the first individual to die from Guillain-Barre Syndrome in Mumbai, as reported by officials on Wednesday. The patient, hailing from Wadala, was employed as a ward boy and had recently visited Pune, a city experiencing an outbreak of this nerve disorder.

The man was admitted to a Mumbai hospital on January 23 in a critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he died on the following Tuesday, officials stated.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, confirmed this as Mumbai's first GBS-related death. Notably, in early February, a 64-year-old woman from Andheri was recognized as the city's first GBS case.
