A global surge in obesity-related cancers has been identified, affecting both young and older adults, according to a recent study by the Institute of Cancer Research and Imperial College London. Researchers emphasize the necessity of considering different age groups when investigating these health trends.
The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, reviewed cancer incidence data from 2003 to 2017. It noted increases in thyroid, breast, kidney, endometrial, and leukemia cases across adults aged 20–49 and those 50 and older, all linked to obesity.
Data from 42 countries demonstrated that cancer rates are rising among younger adults, particularly for thyroid, breast, colorectal, kidney, endometrial cancers, and leukemia. This trend suggests a broader range of factors might influence these increases beyond current screening practices.
