The Mizoram government has extended the enrollment deadline for its healthcare scheme, known as the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS) 2.0, by one month, now until May 15. This decision follows special clearance by the State Election Commission, required due to the Model Code of Conduct in place before the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections.

Though the Election Commission permitted the move to ensure public welfare, it cautioned that the extension should not be exploited for political gains during the election campaign. Launched by the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) administration last year, the scheme aims to provide health coverage up to Rs 5 lakh for beneficiaries upon payment of an annual fee.

Despite its intentions, the scheme faces criticism from opposition parties like the Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress for its alleged inaccessibility and high fees. MNF's Lalrinzuali and Congress leader Joseph Lalhlimpuia have raised concerns over the scheme's transparency and accessibility to the intended beneficiaries.
