Kerala Hospital ICU Under Scrutiny After Fire-Induced Makeshift Setup

An urgent inquiry has been called by the Kerala Human Rights Commission into the continued inadequate conditions of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a government medical college hospital. A fire incident a month ago led to the ICU operating under temporary and insufficient arrangements, compounding difficulties faced by patients.

The commission, led by Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas, initiated the investigation based on reports of delayed repair works from the Public Works Department (PWD) and its electrical wing, which have hindered proper facility restoration. No adequate facilities have been reestablished since a fire erupted in a ventilator.

A senior medical officer has been tasked with evaluating the situation and urging necessary remedies, expected to compile a detailed report within two weeks. Additionally, high-level officials, including the PWD's chief engineer, have been ordered to expedite needed repairs and provide comprehensive updates to ensure patient safety and facility standards.
