A 35-year-old man accused of raping a 60-year-old woman at a brick kiln in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district was injured in an encounter with police, an official said on Thursday.
Circle Officer Deepak Tiwari said police were conducting vehicle checking at a T-point in the Chandausi police station area on the night of May 20 when a motorcycle rider coming from the Bahjoi side attempted to flee after spotting the police.
He said the suspect sped towards a link road and opened fire at the police team while being chased.
In retaliatory firing by the police, the accused sustained a bullet injury in his right leg and was admitted to the Community Health Centre in Chandausi, the officer said.
The accused identified himself as Naseem (35), who is wanted in rape case.
Police recovered a .315 bore country-made pistol, one live cartridge, one empty cartridge case and an unnumbered motorcycle from his possession, he added.
According to police, Naseem is accused of raping a 60-year-old woman living at a brick kiln on the night of May 19.
Police said the accused had allegedly sent the woman's husband to buy liquor before committing the crime. A case was registered against him on the complaint of the survivor's husband.
