Dr S R Mehta, a noted physician and a Padma Shri awardee, died in Jaipur on Thursday after a medical career spanning nearly seven decades, family and medical fraternity sources said. He was 95.

Mehta, the former principal of SMS Medical College, was widely recognised for his contribution to clinical medicine, medical education and healthcare administration.

He was honoured with several awards, including the Padma Shri, Dr B C Roy National Award and Rajasthan Shri for his contribution to medicine and research.

Dr Mehta served on the governing bodies and advisory panels of several premier medical institutions, including the erstwhile Medical Council of India, the Indian Medical Association, National Board of Examinations, Rajasthan Medical Council and committees associated with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

He also served as principal of SMS Medical College and headed Sawai Man Singh Hospital, playing a key role in the development of both institutions.

Known for his diagnostic skills and ethical medical practice, Dr Mehta mentored generations of doctors and remained active in public health and academic discussions for decades.
