Selwyn Gets New After-Hours Urgent Care Service This Weekend

Health Minister Simeon Brown said many families in Selwyn have faced long drives into Christchurch when they needed medical attention outside normal clinic hours.

A new urgent and after-hours healthcare service will begin operating at Toka Hāpai Selwyn Health Hub in Rolleston from Saturday, giving people across the Selwyn district access to medical care closer to home during evenings, weekends, and public holidays. The new service is expected to reduce the number of patients travelling to Christchurch Hospital's emergency department for conditions that can be treated safely in a community setting. It also offers residents a more convenient option when their regular general practice is closed.

A Local Option for Evening and Weekend Care

Health Minister Simeon Brown said many families in Selwyn have faced long drives into Christchurch when they needed medical attention outside normal clinic hours. That has placed extra demand on Christchurch Hospital's emergency department, especially during the busy winter period when patient numbers rise.

The urgent care service will operate from 5pm to 8pm on weekdays and from 9am to 5pm on weekends and public holidays. It is designed for people with injuries or illnesses that need prompt treatment but are not serious enough to require emergency department care.

Patients with life-threatening emergencies should still call emergency services or go directly to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Reducing Pressure on Christchurch's Health Services

Officials expect the new facility to ease demand not only on Christchurch Hospital's emergency department but also on Pegasus 24 Hour Surgery, which has been providing after-hours medical care for many people in the region.

By treating suitable cases within Selwyn, hospital staff in Christchurch will have greater capacity to focus on patients with critical illnesses and complex medical emergencies. Residents will also benefit from receiving care without leaving their own community, cutting travel time and making healthcare more accessible outside regular clinic hours.

Part of a Nationwide Investment

The Selwyn service forms part of the Government's $164 million Budget 2025 investment to expand urgent and after-hours healthcare across New Zealand. The programme aims to improve access to in-person urgent care so that, once fully implemented, 98 per cent of New Zealanders will be able to reach an urgent care service within an hour's drive from home.

The Government says improving community-based healthcare is a key step in strengthening the wider health system by helping hospitals concentrate on patients who need specialist and emergency treatment.

Meeting the Needs of a Growing Community

Rolleston has experienced rapid population growth in recent years, making expanded healthcare services a priority for the area. Limited after-hours medical options have meant many residents needed to travel to Christchurch even for relatively minor urgent health concerns.

Brown said expanding local healthcare services is part of the Government's broader effort to ensure growing communities have access to timely medical care close to where they live. The new urgent care service is expected to provide greater peace of mind for families across Selwyn while supporting a more balanced use of healthcare resources throughout the Canterbury region.
