Brazil's shipments of goods by truck fell 26% on Monday and Tuesday as coronavirus lockdowns went into effect in many parts of the country, according to data released by transportation industry association NTC & Logistica on Thursday. Truck shipments of agricultural goods in Brazil fell 11.5% on those days compared to volumes before coronavirus lockdowns, although demand for grains shipments remains firm and is helping to compensate for reductions in other areas, NTC said.

Perishable goods like fruits and flowers are posting the steepest drops among agricultural goods, said Lauro Valdivia, who led the research for NTC. Lockdowns to slow the spread of the coronavirus in Brazil have varied by individual states and municipalities. Sao Paulo, the largest city, and the surrounding state went into lockdown on Tuesday, with only businesses and services deemed essential allowed to stay open.

Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo reported on Thursday that 22 states have heightened controls on roadways, including measures like traffic checks and limits on passenger vehicles.
