Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer have expressed strong support for collective efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This is Modi's first visit to Austria in 41 years.
In a joint statement released on Wednesday, both leaders emphasized that any resolution must align with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. They asserted that achieving comprehensive and lasting peace requires the involvement of all stakeholders in the conflict.
The statement highlighted the necessity of earnest engagement between the primary conflicting parties. Modi and Nehammer reaffirmed their commitment to diplomatic solutions and called for international support to foster dialogue and reconciliation.
Earlier, Modi stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy, particularly in resolving the Ukraine conflict. Addressing the joint press statement, he noted, 'This is not the time for war.'
Modi further clarified that solutions cannot be found on the battlefield and condemned the killing of innocent people. He emphasized that India and Austria are ready to support peace initiatives through dialogue and diplomacy.
The issue of child casualties in conflicts was also discussed. Modi expressed his distress over the killing of innocent children and called for humane solutions.
On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed disappointment over Modi's visit to Russia and highlighted a missile strike in Kyiv that resulted in the deaths of 37 people, including children.
