In a dramatic turn of events, President Mohammed Shahabuddin of Bangladesh has dissolved the country's parliament a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country. The move aims to establish an interim administration, as reported by Dhaka Tribune.
The decision arose from consultations between President Shahabuddin and key stakeholders, including leaders of the armed forces, various political parties, and the Students Against Discrimination movement. As a result, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been released from imprisonment. Efforts are underway to free those detained during the student protests from July 1 to August 5, with many already liberated.
Earlier, Khaleda Zia was freed following a unanimous decision by a meeting led by President Shahabuddin. Zia, 78, a former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, was jailed on corruption charges in 2018 but has been in poor health. Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina's resignation on August 5 came amid mounting student-led protests against the government. Hasina has since moved to India, with her next destination remaining unclear.
