Nepali security agencies are on high alert as they strengthen surveillance across the border and at the Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu following significant political shifts in Dhaka. The primary objective is to prevent unauthorized entry from Bangladesh via India, as well as to avert possible protests and gatherings at the embassy.
In a statement to ANI, DIG Kumar Neupane of the Armed Police Force (APF) confirmed the heightened measures. 'We have increased vigilance around the Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu and in areas where Bangladeshi nationals may gather. Additionally, we are coordinating with India’s SSB for joint patrols along the border to prevent illegal entries,' Neupane said. This comes after Chief of Nepal's APF, Raju Aryal, discussed increased surveillance over the phone with Indian SSB's DG Daljit Singh Chaudhary.
The Home Ministry of Nepal has issued directives to bolster security and surveillance at all border crossings. Intelligence reports indicate potential demonstrations in Kathmandu by Bangladeshi nationals. The recent political turmoil in Bangladesh saw Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resign and leave the country, leading to widespread unrest and vandalism in Dhaka.
Increased patrols have been noted in Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari districts. After Sheikh Hasina's resignation, Dhaka experienced both celebrations and protests. Protestors breached the Prime Minister's residence and Parliament, vandalized the Chief Justice’s home, and set fire to several significant public buildings, including the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum and the Awami League office.
