Twelve members of a single family perished in Pakistan's Upper Dir when the roof of their mud house collapsed amidst heavy rainfall, Dawn News reported.

The tragic incident occurred in Maidan tehsil, with women and children among the victims. Bodies recovered from the debris were transported to Maidan Hospital after a search operation led by the district emergency officer.

District Police Officer Waqar Ahmed identified the victims, including Noshad Khan, Khan Bacha, Wali Rehman, their wives, and children aged three to 22 years. The calamity highlights the severe impact of Pakistan's ongoing monsoon season, which has battered various regions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, damaging infrastructure such as the bridge connecting Mansehra and Naran.

A temporary steel bridge has been set up for connectivity with Babusar. Landslides have also blocked the Karakoram Highway at Diamer, now reopened, as reported by Dawn News. Pakistan's monsoon season from July to August typically brings about 255mm of rain per month, causing extensive damage year after year.

In 2022, over 75,000 homes were destroyed and 130,000 partially damaged in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone due to the monsoon, according to government and aid agency figures. A recent PDMA report revealed that the current monsoon season has led to 74 deaths, 128 injuries, and 906 damaged houses from July 1 to August 28.

The province continues to suffer from heavy rains, which have led to further fatalities and injuries, including the deaths of a local government representative and a minor boy in separate incidents, according to ANI.
