The 77th session of the World Health Organization's South-East Asia Regional Committee concluded in New Delhi with member states adopting new measures to eliminate measles and rubella by 2026. This decision accompanies the expansion of the regional health emergency fund, essential for disease eradication efforts.
Notably, a strategic plan has been endorsed to sustain measles and rubella elimination from 2024 to 2028. Regional Director Saima Wazed acknowledged the need for revised deadlines and enhanced emergency preparedness.
The Committee also endorsed a focus on adolescent-responsive health systems, essential for achieving universal health coverage and primary healthcare objectives. Attention was given to sustainable development goals, traditional medicine, and disease control, while countries were recognized for public health achievements.
