Severe weather conditions have led to widespread disruption across Italy and central France, with torrential rains causing substantial flooding and destruction, reports Euro News. In Italy, the Emilia Romagna region has experienced significant damage, with over 160 millimeters of rain inundating Bologna alone. The extreme weather has resulted in tragic loss, including the death of an individual whose vehicle was swept away by floodwaters in Pianoro.
The situation remains dire, with red and orange weather alerts in effect until Tuesday. The Italian military has been deployed to assist with rescue efforts in Castel Maggiore, where residents find themselves stranded. Firefighters have attended to over 300 emergencies in Emilia Romagna, particularly in Bologna, where several rivers and streams have overflowed.
In addition, evacuations were necessitated in Cadelbosco di Sopra after the Crostolo torrent, a tributary of the Po River, overflowed. Emergency services in Sicily have rescued individuals from rooftops and stranded vehicles amid flash floods. Meanwhile, in central France, heavy flooding has inflicted widespread damage and power outages. The village of Limony was heavily affected, with over 1,000 residents evacuated as flood levels rose.
As rains have now subsided, people in affected areas are beginning to return home. Meteo France reported unprecedented rainfall, noting that certain regions in Ardeche and Lozere recorded upwards of 685.8 millimeters in 48 hours, underscoring the severity of the situation. (ANI)
