India and Switzerland are currently in discussions to establish a bilateral investment agreement aimed at protecting mutual investments, according to a confirmation by Alexandre Fasel, the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs in Switzerland. This is set against the backdrop of recently intensified economic engagements between the two nations.

During an interview with ANI, Fasel expressed optimism about reaching a favorable agreement. He highlighted a recent visit by the Swiss Secretary for Economic Affairs to India, accompanied by 100 potential investors from Switzerland and other European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries. This visit aimed to explore investment opportunities and understand the conditions necessary for such investments.

The discussions come after Switzerland suspended Most Favored Nation (MFN) treatment for Indian firms, a move that impacted their operational costs and tax dynamics. Alexandre Fasel downplayed concerns regarding the suspension, indicating that it would not affect the ratified free trade agreement. He emphasized the importance of aligning interpretations of the MFN clause within the double taxation agreement to prevent retroactivity disagreements.
