In a pointed response to inquiries about whether the Adani Group case was discussed during his meeting with US President Donald Trump, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that discussions between two prominent national leaders do not revolve around individual cases. Modi emphasized that India is a democracy, underscoring the cultural ethos of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,' which considers the whole world as one family.
The bilateral discussions between Modi and Trump, held in the White House over four hours, marked the Prime Minister's first visit to the US after Trump's second term inauguration. The conversation covered extensive ground, ranging from bilateral relations to regional and global issues. This discourse comes in the backdrop of a US indictment unsealed in November last year linking Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group, to a purported bribery scheme.
Despite allegations appearing from US authorities, the Adani Group has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, calling the claims baseless. Meanwhile, a group of US lawmakers has critiqued the Justice Department's handling of such cases in a letter to Attorney General Pamela Bondi. In a related development, President Trump signed an executive order to halt prosecutions under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, directing a review of the existing law.
