The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) vows continued protests against the PECA amendments, emphasizing legal and public demonstrations. President Afzal Butt appreciates media and civil support, highlighting nationwide hunger strikes and planned protests at Parliament, labeling the law as a breach of constitutional freedoms and human rights.
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has intensified its protests against the government's PECA amendments, pledging to continue demonstrations even if the judiciary rules in favor of the legislation. As reported by Dawn, the protests have entered their second day, with participants announcing plans for escalated action.
PFUJ President Afzal Butt expressed thanks to media, human rights supporters, and civil society for joining nationwide hunger strikes. 'On one front, we're protesting in the streets; on the other, we're fighting this black law in court,' Butt stated, hoping the judiciary will overturn provisions infringing on human rights.
Moreover, a major sit-in is scheduled outside the Parliament House, inviting citizens to join until demands are met, according to Dawn. Support from veteran journalists and citizens was evident at the National Press Club camp in the capital. Former PFUJ secretary general Nasir Zaidi condemned the amendments as 'media martial law,' stressing it stifles free expression without public or parliamentary discourse.
